As a new team, we have a lot to learn about the inner workings and culture of the FRC World.  This year was not very successful in terms of the actual competition but the experiences that we had made it worth our efforts.
The benefit from a "trial-by-fire" was that our lessons were learned through  many mistakes with in the technology and in the management of the team.   We have a team of very able and intelligent students who need  the guidance of experienced mentors but at the same, the need to call their own the processes of designing, building and operating their creations.
Starting the next year will be easier because of the experience gained from our efforts. Here are some things we are considering for 2017 season:

  • One of the most important aspects of effective team operation is planning.  Team members need to know what to expect on a day-to-day basis.  We have a student who is willing to be the  "planning captain" to organize schedules and deadlines.
  • Sponsors have to be recruited before the next school year starts.  We currently have one major sponsors (Argosy) and a few organizations tht have given us money for tools, shirts and other materials.  There are sponsors in our area who have expressed interest and we must follow through in asking them to help us out.
  • We must rely more on our FRC mentors team for assistance.  Northern lower Michigan has a phenomenal organization of students and mentor experts for assistance.  There are many workshops and gatherings for technical and organizational assistance.
  • Student team members have to be WAY more involved in the whole process rom design to operation.  I am counting on students to become aware of  some of the other tasks and duties as well.

Robotics was very valuable to me. It taught me to think through problems I have never had before. It requires perseverance to create something I had never made before, and to stick with the project when it seemed impossible. I honed my skills in situational management, seeing what needed to be done and taking responsibility. I also met people I would have otherwise never socialized with. All in all Robotics was an incredibly valuable opportunity in my life I am happy to have been a part in..

Well I was a part of the robotics team and I would say i contributed a lot until it came to the end of the season because I got caught up on other priorities... Robotics at the school of Roscommon High School was an great experience for me and for my future. so if we can do this next year I will be happy to do it again.

Thank you Mr. Rothney for giving me a position in robotic team 6074 as a programmer. During the time I was in the team, I learned many things in programing as well as drilling, assembling robot and wiring. I hope our team next year will be stronger and will have a ticket to the world final.
